Bhubaneswar, June 23: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday announced an increase in ex gratia assistance to ₹10 lakh for the families of Odia workers who lost their lives in the ammonia gas leak tragedy at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.

The compensation amount, which was initially fixed at ₹4 lakh per deceased worker from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), was revised upward following a review of the situation by the state government as the number of fatalities increased.

Expressing profound sorrow over the tragic incident, the Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of all possible assistance from the Odisha government during this difficult time. He stated that the welfare of migrant workers remains a priority and that the government is closely monitoring developments related to the incident.

The ammonia gas leak occurred on June 21 at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district, where several workers, including migrant labourers from Odisha, were exposed to the toxic gas. Many workers sustained injuries and were admitted to hospitals for treatment.

The death toll among Odia workers rose to seven on Tuesday after Jamuni Juang of Keonjhar district succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. All seven deceased workers belonged to Keonjhar district.

The Odisha government is coordinating with the Tamil Nadu administration to ensure proper treatment of the injured, facilitate the return of mortal remains, and provide support to the affected families. Officials have also been deputed to oversee relief and rehabilitation efforts.
