Naveen Patnaik seeks immediate action over pregnant woman’s murder
Bhubaneswar, May 6: Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday wrote to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, urging immediate action in connection with the alleged murder of a pregnant woman in Kharida village under Hinjili constituency in Ganjam district.
Describing the incident as a “heinous crime” that has “shocked the conscience of Odisha,” Patnaik cited reports and purported video evidence suggesting that the woman was killed in front of her three-year-old daughter, allegedly by the brother of her partner.
In his letter, Patnaik called upon the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, to ensure the swift arrest of all accused persons and to order a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the crime. He also raised concerns over the alleged inaction of police, noting that the victim had reportedly been staging a dharna seeking justice prior to the incident.
Emphasising the trauma faced by the minor child who witnessed the incident, Patnaik sought immediate government intervention for her care, compensation, and rehabilitation.
He further urged the Chief Minister’s personal intervention to ensure strict punishment for the perpetrators in accordance with the law and to take preventive measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents in the future.
