Odisha Govt orders statewide school closure from April 27 amid heatwave
Bhubaneswar, April 24: In view of the severe heatwave sweeping across the state, the Odisha government has announced closure of all schools—government, government-aided, and private—from April 27 until further notice.
The decision was taken following a proposal by the School and Mass Education Department, which received immediate approval from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The move aims to safeguard students from extreme temperatures and rising heat-related health risks.
Despite the suspension of regular classes, authorities have clarified that pre-scheduled examinations will be conducted as planned. Additionally, essential activities such as census-related work and administrative functions within schools will continue without disruption.
Officials said the decision reflects the government’s proactive approach to prioritising student safety amid worsening weather conditions. Odisha has been experiencing unusually high temperatures in recent days, with several districts recording over 40°C, prompting heatwave alerts across the state.
Parents and school authorities have welcomed the move, noting that it will help prevent heat-related illnesses among children. The government is expected to review the situation periodically and take further decisions based on prevailing weather conditions.
