Odisha declared Maoist-free: DGP Y.B. Khurania
Bhubaneswar, April 17: Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania on Thursday declared that Odisha is now a Maoist-free state, marking a significant milestone in the state’s internal security efforts.
Addressing the media, Khurania attributed the achievement to sustained anti-Maoist operations and a steady stream of surrenders by extremists over the years. He stated that Left Wing Extremism activities have been effectively eliminated from the state due to coordinated efforts by multiple security agencies.
“We have not yet withdrawn the police camps in Maoist-affected areas. However, we can now confidently say that Odisha is Maoist-free,” he said.
The DGP emphasized that despite this achievement, the state remains vigilant. Security forces are closely monitoring activities in neighboring states to prevent any possible infiltration or resurgence of extremist elements.
The announcement comes after years of joint operations carried out by Odisha Police, Special Operations Group (SOG), District Volunteer Force (DVF), and central forces such as the CRPF in previously affected districts.
Police camps in sensitive and remote areas will continue to remain operational for the time being to ensure lasting peace and stability. Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict surveillance and quick response mechanisms to safeguard the gains achieved.
