Bhitarkanika National Park to remain closed for 3 months
Bhubaneswar, April 16: The Bhitarkanika National Park, renowned as the home of giant saltwater crocodiles, will remain closed to tourists from May 1 to July 31, authorities have announced.
According to reports, the closure order has been issued by the Rajnagar Forest Division to ensure a disturbance-free environment during the annual breeding and nesting season of crocodiles.
During this period, crocodiles inhabiting the rivers, creeks, and water bodies within the park begin building nests and laying eggs. After laying eggs, female crocodiles turn highly aggressive and remain protective of their nests for several weeks. Officials said restricting human movement is crucial to safeguard both the reptiles and their eggs.
The temporary ban on tourist activities aims to prevent any disruption to the sensitive mating and nesting process. Visitors have been strictly advised to avoid planning trips to the park during these three months.
Bhitarkanika is a major tourist attraction in Odisha, drawing thousands of visitors, especially in winter, for its unique mangrove ecosystem and opportunities for crocodile sighting. The park is expected to reopen for tourists from August 1.
