₹4 crore cash unearthed from mines official’s flat; Odisha Vigilance makes record seizure
Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: In a major anti-corruption crackdown, the Odisha Vigilance has seized more than ₹4 crore in cash from the flat of Debabrata Mohanty, Deputy Director of Mines, Cuttack Circle, following his arrest for allegedly accepting a ₹30,000 bribe from a licensed coal vendor.
The massive haul, reportedly concealed in trolley bags and almirahs inside his residence, is being described as the highest cash seizure in the history of Odisha Vigilance. Officials said the recovery was made during a search operation carried out after Mohanty was caught red-handed on Tuesday while accepting the bribe.
According to an official press note, the accused had allegedly demanded illegal gratification from a businessman in exchange for allowing the smooth operation of his coal depot and granting permission for coal transportation. Acting on a complaint, Vigilance officials laid a trap and apprehended Mohanty while he was receiving the bribe amount.
Following his arrest, simultaneous searches were conducted at multiple locations linked to him, leading to the recovery of the huge unaccounted cash. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the seized money and possible involvement of others.
