Class VII student succumbs to burn injuries after school fire mishap in Rayagada
Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: A 12-year-old student who had suffered severe burn injuries in a fire accident at Paikadakuluguda Primary School in Bissam Cuttack block of Rayagada district on January 5 passed away on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The deceased, Biren Takri, was a Class VII student. The tragic incident had occurred when a group of students were reportedly playing with a thinner bottle on the school premises. The bottle suddenly caught fire, and the flames quickly spread to their clothes, leaving four students critically injured.
Apart from Biren, three other students — Naveen Huika, Rohit Khora and Sudam Bag — were also hurt in the mishap. While the other children recovered after treatment and were discharged, Biren remained in critical condition due to extensive burns.
Following his death, grieving family members and villagers alleged inadequate medical care and staged a sit-in protest on the school campus, even locking teachers inside for several hours. Police later intervened, freed the teachers and brought the situation under control after nearly three hours of tension.
