Fresh low pressure likely over Bay; IMD issues rain, thunderstorm alert for Odisha
Bhubaneswar, Feb 20: The regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, while issuing rain and thunderstorm warnings for parts of Odisha.
According to the IMD, the earlier low-pressure area over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal became less marked at 8:30 AM today. However, the associated upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the region, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level, and is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka within the next 24 hours.
Another upper air cyclonic circulation, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, continues over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form in the next 48 hours and subsequently move west-northwestwards.
The IMD has predicted light rain or thundershowers at isolated places in several districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Puri, Cuttack, and Balasore, between February 23 and 24, while dry weather is expected to prevail in the remaining districts.
