Odisha invites proposals for creation of new districts in 2026–27
Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: The Odisha government has invited proposals for the formation of new districts during the 2026–27 financial year, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari informed the State Legislative Assembly in a written reply on Thursday.
Responding to a query in the House, the Minister said the government is open to examining fresh proposals for district reorganisation if formally submitted. He clarified that any proposal received will be assessed strictly in accordance with established administrative norms, geographical feasibility, population considerations, and governance requirements before a final decision is taken.
Pujari further stated that demands for new districts have been mounting from various regions to improve administrative efficiency and accelerate development. According to the written reply, memoranda seeking the creation of as many as 31 new districts have already been submitted to the state government by different organisations and local stakeholders.
These proposals are currently under preliminary consideration by the authorities. The Minister indicated that detailed evaluations will be carried out to examine infrastructure needs, revenue viability, and public service delivery before moving forward.
The move is expected to spark wider discussions on administrative restructuring aimed at strengthening grassroots governance and regional development across the state.
