Jewellery shop owner robbed of gold worth ₹50 lakh in Balasore

Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: A jewellery shop owner was robbed of gold ornaments worth nearly ₹50 lakh by four armed miscreants at Santaragadia Square under Nilagiri police limits in Balasore on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the victim, Krupasindhu Rana (52), had closed his jewellery shop and was returning home when the incident took place. Four robbers, travelling on two motorcycles, intercepted him on the way. The assailants allegedly threatened Rana at gunpoint and forcibly snatched a bag containing gold ornaments.

In a shocking turn, the criminals reportedly fired a shot during the robbery. However, Rana managed to escape without sustaining any injuries. The gunfire created panic in the area, though no other casualties were reported.

On receiving information, local police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. Nilagiri IIC Gobardhan Nayak visited the scene and seized bullet shells as evidence to aid the probe.

Police sources said efforts are underway to identify and trace the accused using local intelligence and CCTV footage. As of Thursday morning, no formal complaint had been filed by the jeweller.
