Five arrested in Cuttack Press Colony shooting case
Bhubaneswar, Feb 20: Five young men have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting at Press Colony in Cuttack, and the firearm used in the crime has been seized, Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said at a press conference on Friday.
Police said the incident occurred during a late-night drinking session inside a house in the area. Six persons had gathered and were consuming alcohol when casual banter allegedly escalated into heated arguments over personal and family matters.
During the altercation, Utkal Keshari Pasayat alias Huku allegedly took a firearm brought by Nandu alias Abhijit Mohanty. Pasayat reportedly stepped outside, where Soumya alias Rinku allegedly taunted him about carrying and using the weapon. In a sudden escalation, Pasayat allegedly fired at Soumya, critically injuring him.
Investigators revealed that instead of immediately rushing Soumya to hospital, those present discussed their next move. By the time he was taken to a nearby private hospital, crucial time had been lost. Police said he was still alive during the delay.
The accused allegedly later conspired to manage the fallout, with the firearm concealed inside the house. Multiple police teams tracked down and arrested five accused, several of whom have prior criminal records.
