CRPF jawan kills himself with service weapon in Rourkela camp
Bhubaneswar, Feb 9: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself at the Matkanjharan CRPF Camp under Lathikata police limits in Odisha’s Rourkela on Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Subhash Prasad (56), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who was serving in the force as a havildar. According to preliminary reports, Prasad allegedly used his service rifle to take the extreme step within the camp premises, triggering shock among fellow personnel.
On being alerted, Lathikata police rushed to the spot, seized the weapon, and initiated an investigation. The body was later sent for post-mortem examination as part of procedural formalities.
While the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be determined, initial inputs suggest that personal or family-related issues may have contributed to his mental distress leading to the tragic act. Officials said all angles are being examined.
Notably, the Matkanjharan CRPF Camp was established in October last year along the Odisha–Jharkhand border to strengthen anti-Maoist operations. It was inaugurated by Western Range DIG Brijesh Rai in the presence of Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani.
