Bhubaneswar, Feb 9: A tragic incident has been reported from Odisha’s Cuttack district, where a youth who suffered critical burn injuries after allegedly setting himself on fire succumbed while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Amiya Singh of Ostia village under Banki police limits. According to preliminary reports, Amiya allegedly poured an inflammable substance on himself and set himself ablaze, sustaining nearly 90 per cent burn injuries. He was initially rushed to a local medical facility and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital as his condition deteriorated. Despite intensive treatment, doctors could not save him.

Family members alleged that Amiya had been under severe mental stress due to unresolved employment issues following his father’s death in 2019. They claimed that no family member had received a job under the compassionate appointment scheme even after seven years. Despite completing all required formalities, the promised employment never materialised, pushing him into depression.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining all circumstances leading to the extreme step.
