Bhubaneswar, Feb 5: The Odisha government has initiated steps to revise the English spellings of several district and place names to better reflect their original Odia pronunciation and linguistic heritage.

As per a notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, the spellings of seven districts and 24 places across 11 districts are proposed to be corrected. The move is aimed at ensuring phonetic accuracy and preserving the cultural identity of Odia place names in official records.

Among the key proposed changes, Khurda will be spelled as Khoradha, Balasore as Baleshwar, Keonjhar as Kendujhar, and Khondmal as Kandhamal. Similarly, Deogarh is set to become Debagarh, Angul will be written as Anugol, Nayagarh as Nayagada, and Rairakhol as Redhakhol. Other revisions include Kendrapara to Kendrapada and Keonjhargarh to Kendujhargarh.

The state government has invited objections and suggestions from the public and stakeholders. Responses must be submitted in writing along with supporting documents within 15 days of the notification’s publication.

Officials stated that objections received after the deadline will not be considered, and if none are received, the revised spellings will be implemented as per legal provisions.
