Odisha poised to emerge as ‘Blue Economy’ hub after India–US seafood trade boost
Bhubaneswar, Feb 5: Odisha is set to emerge as a major hub of the ‘Blue Economy’ following the new trade agreement between India and the United States that reduces tariffs on Indian seafood exports. The development is expected to significantly enhance demand for Odisha’s shrimp, fish, and other marine products in the lucrative American market, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister noted that the agreement would provide a fresh identity to Odisha’s marine food economy and strengthen its position in global seafood trade. He emphasised that the tariff reduction would make Indian seafood more competitive, opening new avenues for exporters from the state.
The United States is among the largest importers of Indian seafood, and the revised trade terms are expected to create expanded business opportunities for processors, exporters, and aquaculture farmers.
The move is likely to have a direct positive impact on Odisha’s coastal belt, where lakhs depend on fishing and allied activities for their livelihood. Higher export demand is expected to boost incomes of fishermen and shrimp farmers while accelerating the state’s transformation into a ‘Blue Economy’ powerhouse.
