Young couple humiliated and forced to plough field as punishment for inter-caste marriage in Rayagada

Bhubaneswar, July 11: A deeply disturbing case of social cruelty has emerged from Kanjamajhira village under Sikarpai panchayat in Rayagada district’s Kalyansingpur block, where a young couple was subjected to a barbaric form of punishment for marrying against societal and traditional norms. The couple, identified as Laka and Kodia, are related by blood — with Kodia being Laka’s paternal aunt. Despite the familial ties, they fell in love and chose to get married, defying deep-seated local taboos.
The villagers were outraged upon learning of the marriage and decided to take justice into their own hands. In a shocking act of mob vigilantism, the couple was tied to a wooden yoke used for bullocks and forced to drag a plough across a field — a degrading and humiliating punishment meted out in full view of the entire village. Hundreds reportedly watched in silence, with no one stepping forward to stop the cruel act.
As if the ordeal wasn’t enough, the couple was then taken to the village shrine and compelled to undergo “purification rituals” to supposedly cleanse them of their "sin." The incident has sparked outrage and demands for strict legal action against those responsible.
