Diarrhoea outbreak claims two more lives in Jajpur, death toll rises to four

Bhubaneswar, June 12: The diarrhoea outbreak in Odisha’s Jajpur district has turned more alarming with two more deaths reported on Thursday, taking the total death toll to four. Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr. Prakash Bal confirmed that two women, aged 75 and 42, succumbed to the illness while undergoing treatment.
At present, 134 patients are receiving treatment at Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital, while others are being treated in Community Health Centres (CHCs) at Dharmasala, Jajpur Road, and Danagadi. While the condition of patients in peripheral hospitals remains stable, critical cases have been referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
To manage the crisis, two state-level Rapid Action Teams (RATs)—comprising medical officers, microbiologists, and epidemiologists—have been deployed. These teams are working in coordination with the Chief District Medical and Public Health Officer to ensure quick containment and treatment.
Director of Public Health Services, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, informed that all affected individuals and sporadic cases in nearby areas are being closely monitored and treated promptly. Additionally, specialists from Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College and six medicine experts from SCB Medical College are also assisting in handling the outbreak and providing comprehensive care.
