Odisha faces sweltering heat: IMD predicts rising temperatures
Bhubaneswar, April 16: Odisha grapples with scorching heatwave conditions as temperatures soar, with six areas registering 40°C or higher by 2:30 PM on Tuesday. Bhubaneswar takes the lead with a blistering 41.9°C, followed closely by Chandbali at 41.6°C, Jharsuguda at 41.4°C, Balasore at 40.5°C, Sambalpur at 40.3°C, and Keonjhar at an even 40°C. Other areas also experience significant heat, with warnings issued across the region.
The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional center reports these temperatures, cautioning of prolonged high temperatures in Odisha. Bhubaneswar, Chandbali, Jharsuguda, Balasore, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Rourkela, Hirakud, Gopalpur, Puri, and Paradip are notably affected.
In response, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for heatwave conditions in 20 districts, anticipating sustained high temperatures over the next four days. Special emphasis is placed on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and pregnant women, advising them to minimize outdoor activities between 11 am and 3 pm.
Forecasters anticipate a further increase of 4°C to 5°C in maximum temperatures over the coming days. On April 17, heatwave alerts are in place for districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Kandhamal, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Angul, Bhadrak, Boudh, and Khurda.
