Pollution peaks in Odisha: Balasore's severe air quality raises concerns

Bhubaneswar, Jan 17: The atmospheric conditions in three towns of Odisha persist in exhibiting poor air quality, with Balasore registering an air quality index (AQI) worse than that of New Delhi. According to the 4:00 pm report released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on Tuesday, Balasore recorded an average AQI of 406 (severe), surpassing New Delhi's 371 (very poor).
Likewise, Baripada in Odisha reported an AQI of 355 (very poor), while Angul recorded 314 (very poor). The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack displayed AQI values of 274 (poor) and 252 (poor), respectively. Talcher also experienced an AQI of 244 (poor).
The suboptimal air quality in these Odisha towns is attributed to factors such as dense foggy conditions, pollutants stemming from heavy road traffic, and industrial and mining activities. The presence of dense fog hampers the dispersion of pollutants into the atmosphere, leading to a deterioration in the AQI.
