Low-pressure area likely over Bay of Bengal around May 10
Bhubaneswar, May 7: A low-pressure system is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 10, according to forecasts by several global weather models, including the European weather model. However, meteorologists have said there is still significant uncertainty regarding the system’s intensity and movement.
Weather experts indicated that multiple models are pointing towards the development of a low-pressure area near the Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coast. The exact track and strength of the system are expected to become clearer after May 11, once the prevailing trough line over central India weakens.
Meanwhile, several parts of Odisha have been experiencing moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activity over the past few days due to existing weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across most districts of Odisha from May 7 to May 13.
For Wednesday, the regional weather office issued yellow warnings for districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, and Kandhamal, forecasting thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph.
In addition, districts such as Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Nuapada, and Balangir are likely to witness moderate thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30–40 kmph during afternoon and evening hours.
