Bhubaneswar, Sept 1: The Special Crime Unit (SCU) of the Commissionerate Police on Tuesday conducted raids at multiple shops and suspected drug-sale points near educational institutions in the city, detaining three persons and recovering a substantial quantity of suspected ganja and other contraband.

The raids were carried out at Kalpana Square, Chilli Pokhari, Old Station Bazaar, Laxmisagar and areas behind BJB College. Police said the operation focused on shops and establishments allegedly involved in the sale of ganja, gutkha and pan masala, particularly those operating close to educational institutions.

A senior police officer said three persons had been detained during the operation and suspected contraband recovered from their possession. The seized substances will be properly measured and examined before further legal action is initiated.

During the raids, police also allegedly found some betel shop operators concealing suspected drugs inside incense-stick packets. Packets containing suspected ganja were recovered from some establishments, officials said.

The enforcement drive is part of the state government’s ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan’, aimed at curbing the illegal sale and distribution of narcotic substances.

Police said such raids would continue regularly across the city. Alongside enforcement, the department will also intensify awareness programmes among students, shopkeepers and the public to discourage drug abuse and promote a drug-free society.
