Woman’s body carried on bicycle to police station in protest over land dispute killing
Bhubaneswar, May 12: In a shocking incident highlighting public outrage over alleged police inaction, family members of a deceased woman carried her body on a bicycle to the police station in protest after a long-pending land dispute turned fatal in Balasore district.
The incident took place in Haripur village under Khaira police station limits. The deceased woman has been identified as Kamala Sethi.
According to reports, tension erupted in the village after Kamala Sethi was allegedly attacked on May 10 by Bharat Jena, his son Manas Jena, and wife Bharati Jena over an ongoing land dispute that had reportedly continued for nearly five years. The accused allegedly assaulted Kamala and another woman using a hammer and sharp weapons.
Kamala died on the spot due to grievous injuries, while her sister-in-law sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
After Kamala’s body was brought home late Sunday night, grieving family members and villagers decided to carry the body on a bicycle to Khaira Police Station on Monday as a mark of protest. The family alleged that despite repeated complaints over the years, police had failed to resolve the dispute or take effective preventive action.
Police officials claimed notices had earlier been issued in connection with the matter and appealed to the family to transport the body in an ambulance. However, the relatives refused and continued their protest outside the police station demanding immediate arrest of all the accused.
Villagers also joined the agitation, seeking justice for the deceased woman and strict action against those responsible for the murder.
