Himanta Biswa Sarma Begins Second Consecutive Term as Assam Chief Minister

Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second straight term during a grand ceremony held at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, on Monday. The oath-taking event marked a major political milestone for the BJP-led NDA alliance after its emphatic victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the presence of several top national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Chief ministers and senior leaders from various NDA-ruled states also attended the event, highlighting the importance of Assam in the BJP’s broader political strategy in the Northeast.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a sweeping mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections, comfortably crossing the majority mark in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with a commanding tally, while its alliance partners — the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People's Front — also delivered strong performances. The alliance’s dominant victory has further strengthened the NDA’s hold over the northeastern region.

Following the election results, the BJP legislature party unanimously chose Himanta Biswa Sarma as its leader, paving the way for his continuation as chief minister. Sarma, known for his administrative skills and political influence, has been a key architect of the BJP’s expansion in the Northeast over the last several years. During his previous tenure, the Assam government focused on infrastructure growth, welfare schemes, healthcare expansion, and efforts to improve connectivity across the state.

Along with Sarma, several ministers also took oath as members of the new cabinet. Among them were senior BJP leader Rameswar Teli, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, AGP president Atul Bora, and BPF leader Charan Boro. The inclusion of leaders from alliance parties reflected the NDA’s attempt to maintain regional balance and coalition unity in the state government.

Addressing supporters after the ceremony, Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the people of Assam for placing their trust in the NDA government once again. He promised to continue working for the development of the state and emphasized priorities such as economic growth, employment generation, women’s welfare, education, and law and order.

The ceremony also carried symbolic significance as it marked the NDA government’s third consecutive term in Assam, a state once considered difficult terrain for the BJP. Political observers believe the victory further cements the BJP’s position as the dominant political force in the Northeast ahead of future national and regional elections.

With the new government officially in place, attention will now shift toward cabinet expansion, implementation of election promises, and the administration’s roadmap for Assam’s development in the coming years.
