Leopard dies after getting trapped in hunter’s snare in Balasore forest
Bhubaneswar, May 12: A leopard died after getting trapped in an illegal hunter’s snare in the Kathagochhi forest under Nilagiri forest range in Balasore district on Tuesday, triggering concern among wildlife officials and local residents.
According to reports, the leopard had reportedly strayed out of the nearby Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary late on Monday night and entered the Kathagochhi forest area. On Tuesday morning, villagers heard loud growls coming from the forest and rushed to the spot to investigate.
Locals were shocked to find the leopard trapped in a wire snare allegedly laid by poachers or illegal hunters inside the forest area. The animal was reportedly struggling for survival after sustaining severe injuries due to the trap.
Despite attempts to save the animal, the leopard succumbed to its injuries shortly after being discovered.
Following the incident, officials and staff of the Forest Department rushed to the spot and conducted a preliminary inquiry. The carcass of the leopard was recovered and necessary procedures were initiated by the authorities.
Forest officials said an investigation has been launched to identify the persons responsible for laying the illegal snare in the forest. Efforts are underway to trace those involved in poaching activities in the region.
The incident has once again highlighted the threat posed by illegal hunting traps to wildlife in forest areas adjoining protected sanctuaries. Forest authorities have said strict action will be taken against the culprits under wildlife protection laws once they are identified and arrested.
