Two injured in police encounter near Belpahar, investigation underway
Bhubaneswar, May 12: Two accused persons sustained bullet injuries during a police encounter near the Karlakhaman area under Belpahar police station limits in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district early Monday morning. The encounter took place after the accused allegedly opened fire on a police team attempting to apprehend them in connection with an assault case reported on Sunday.
According to police sources, the accused had been absconding since the assault incident and were hiding in the area. Acting on specific intelligence regarding their whereabouts, a police team launched a search operation in the early hours of Monday.
When the police team reached the spot and attempted to intercept them, the accused allegedly fired four rounds at the officers in an attempt to escape. In response, police retaliated in self-defence, leading to a brief exchange of fire between the two sides.
Belpahar police station officials stated that both accused suffered bullet injuries to their legs during the encounter. They were immediately rescued by the police and shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.
No police personnel were injured during the operation. Security has been tightened in the area following the incident.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the full sequence of events and determine the criminal background and possible involvement of the accused in other offences. More details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
