IMD issues orange alert for thunderstorms in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, May 4: The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for six districts of Odisha, forecasting severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hailstorms, and strong gusty winds for tomorrow.
According to the IMD, districts including Mayurbhanj district, Keonjhar district, Balasore district, Kandhamal district, Ganjam district, and Gajapati district are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning, hail, and surface winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph during the afternoon and evening hours.
A yellow warning has also been issued for several other districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh, where heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and winds of 40–50 kmph are expected.
Meanwhile, moderate thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30–40 kmph are likely in districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur.
The IMD has urged residents to remain cautious, avoid venturing outdoors during storm hours, and stay away from trees, open fields, and water bodies. Farmers have also been advised to postpone agricultural activities during the warning period.
