Congress to go solo in Odisha local polls
Bhubaneswar, April 28: In a significant political development, Bhakta Charan Das, president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee, has announced that the Congress will contest the upcoming Panchayat and Municipal elections independently, ruling out any alliance with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Speaking to the media, Das said that although discussions were underway regarding a possible tie-up with the BJD, strong opposition from party leaders and grassroots workers led to a change in stance. “Many leaders and workers expressed discomfort over an alliance. Respecting their sentiments, we have decided to contest the elections on our own strength,” he stated, making it clear that Congress will fight alone in the local body polls.
However, Das indicated that the party remains open to future alliances if necessary. He said any decision regarding a potential tie-up during Assembly elections would be taken only after detailed consultations with the party’s central leadership.
The announcement marks a shift from his earlier remarks hinting at a possible alliance, reflecting internal feedback within the party. The move is being seen as an effort to maintain unity and reinforce Congress’s independent political identity ahead of the crucial local elections expected later this year.
