Odisha forms Special Development Councils in 23 districts to boost tribal growth
Bhubaneswar, April 6: In a major push for inclusive development, the government of Odisha has constituted Special Development Councils (SDCs) across 23 districts and announced the appointment of Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons for each body on Monday. The initiative is aimed at accelerating progress in tribal-dominated regions through focused planning and decentralized governance.
The SDCs are envisioned as key district-level institutions that will strengthen grassroots administration, ensure effective implementation of welfare schemes, and promote holistic development. A special emphasis will be placed on preserving the unique socio-cultural identity, traditions, art, and heritage of tribal communities.
These councils will play a crucial role in identifying local needs, prioritizing projects, and executing development initiatives. Once funds are allocated by the state government, the SDCs will independently decide on resource utilization for infrastructure, livelihood, and community-based programmes, ensuring tailored solutions for each district.
Among the notable appointments, Basistha Nayak has been named Chairman for Angul, while Ballav Dharua will head Bolangir and Bipin Marandi will lead Balasore. Similarly, Gobardhan Bhoy has been appointed for Bargarh and Damarudhar Kanhar for Boudh, among others.
The formation of these councils is expected to significantly enhance governance and bring targeted benefits to tribal populations, ensuring more efficient delivery of development schemes at the grassroots level.
