Odisha Assembly paralysed over SCB fire; opposition demands Health Minister’s resignation
Bhubaneswar, Mar 19: The Odisha Legislative Assembly remained paralysed on Thursday as Opposition members intensified their protest, demanding the resignation of Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling over the devastating fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital that claimed 13 lives.
The Opposition, led by the Biju Janata Dal and the Indian National Congress, staged strong protests inside the House, alleging gross negligence in maintaining hospital safety standards. Members raised slogans and refused to allow proceedings to continue, insisting that the minister must step down on moral grounds.
Leader of Opposition Pramila Mallik launched a sharp attack on the government, accusing it of inaction and lack of accountability. She stated that the Health Minister has failed in his duty and should resign, taking responsibility for the tragic incident.
The fire tragedy has triggered a major political storm in the state, with tensions escalating inside the Assembly. Opposition members have made it clear that they will not allow the House to function until their demand is met.
Amid the continuous uproar, Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the House multiple times—first till 11:30 am, then 1 pm, and later 4 pm—in an attempt to restore order.
Despite repeated adjournments, the deadlock persisted, highlighting the deepening political crisis in Odisha.
