IMD issues orange, yellow alerts for Odisha; thunderstorms, hail likely till March 26

Bhubaneswar, Mar 19: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow warnings for multiple districts across Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail and gusty winds until March 26.

For March 20, the IMD has placed Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal and Ganjam under orange alert, warning of thunderstorms with lightning, hail and strong winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph at isolated places. Meanwhile, districts including Gajapati, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangapur, Rayagada and Malkangiri have been issued a yellow alert, with predictions of moderate thunderstorms and winds of 30–40 kmph.

On March 21, severe weather conditions are expected in northern and western districts such as Sundergarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Sambalpur, which have been placed under orange alert. Several other districts, including Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh and Sonepur, are under yellow warning for similar but less intense conditions.

For March 22, coastal and northern districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jajpur are likely to witness thunderstorms with gusty winds of up to 50–60 kmph. Other areas, including Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur, may experience lighter thunderstorms.

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, avoid open areas during lightning, and follow safety guidelines as adverse weather conditions persist across the state.
