No plan for 300 units free power in Odisha, says Deputy CM in Assembly
Bhubaneswar, Mar 18: The Odisha Legislative Assembly was informed on Wednesday that the state government has no scheme to provide 300 units of free electricity to households, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo clarified.
Responding to a query raised by MLA Sagar Charan Das, the Deputy CM stated that no such proposal is currently under implementation in the state. The clarification comes amid growing public discussions around free electricity schemes being implemented in other parts of the country.
However, the minister highlighted that the government is actively promoting renewable energy solutions through the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Under this initiative, households are encouraged to install rooftop solar panels, enabling them to generate up to 300 units of electricity per month for their own consumption.
Providing details, Singh Deo informed the House that as of March 12, a total of 46,793 households in Odisha have already installed rooftop solar plants. Financial assistance has also been extended, with subsidies amounting to ₹261.68 crore from the Centre and ₹197.31 crore from the state government.
He further added that the government aims to expand the scheme to benefit around 3 lakh households by the financial year 2026–27, ensuring access to affordable and sustainable electricity solutions across the state.
