Odisha Assembly adjourned amid opposition uproar over gas price hike
Bhubaneswar, Mar 12: Proceedings of the Odisha Legislative Assembly were adjourned till 4 pm on Thursday following repeated disruptions caused by opposition protests over the recent hike in cooking gas prices. The protests led to multiple interruptions during the day’s session, forcing the Speaker to suspend the proceedings several times.
Opposition MLAs strongly criticised the government over the increase in gas prices, claiming that the decision has added to the financial burden on common people already struggling with rising living costs. Raising slogans inside the House, the legislators demanded immediate intervention from the state government to address the issue and provide relief to the public.
As the protests intensified, the opposition members staged a walkout from the Assembly, accusing the government of ignoring the hardships faced by ordinary citizens. They also alleged that there was an ongoing shortage of cooking gas supply in several parts of the state and that the government had failed to take adequate steps to resolve the problem.
Due to the continuous uproar, Speaker Surama Padhy first adjourned the House till 11:30 am, then till 12:10 pm, and finally till 4 pm. The Assembly is expected to reconvene later in the afternoon, with further protests likely from the opposition benches.
