Class V student’s death triggers suspension of two teachers in Nayagarh
Bhubaneswar, Feb 4: Two teachers of Belpada Primary School under Gania block in Nayagarh district have been suspended following the tragic death of a Class V student whose body was recovered from an open well on Wednesday. The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the area and raised serious concerns over student safety and supervision in schools.
Confirming the action, Gania Block Education Officer (BEO) Lipsa Nanda said the school headmistress and a female teacher, who were present on duty on Tuesday, were placed under suspension for alleged negligence. She said a Block Resource Centre Coordinator (BRCC) immediately conducted a field inspection after the incident was reported. Subsequently, the District Education Officer, BRCC, CRCC and BEO jointly visited the village to assess the situation.
The deceased student has been identified as Bijay Mallick. According to reports, Bijay left the school premises around 1 pm on Tuesday after consuming the mid-day meal, reportedly to relieve himself, but never returned. When he did not come back home, villagers launched a search and lodged a missing complaint at Gania Police Station. His body was later found in an open well near the village on Wednesday morning.
Following the recovery, angry villagers blocked the Kantilo–Daspalla road, alleging foul play and lapses in supervision. The IIC of Gania Police Station and the SDPO of Khandapada reached the spot and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
