Record over 11 lakh migratory birds flock to Chilika Lake, two new species spotted
Bhubaneswar, Jan 19: Chilika Lake in Odisha has witnessed a record influx of migratory birds this year, with over 11 lakh birds representing 196 species arriving from different parts of India and abroad. According to officials, this marks an increase of 4,972 birds compared to last year, bringing cheer to environmentalists and bird lovers.
Out of the total count, 11,10,257 are foreign birds belonging to 106 species. Adding to the excitement, two new species – the Plain Martin and the Bengal Bush Lark – have been spotted at Chilika for the first time. Among all species, the Northern Pintail dominates the count with 2,18,993 birds recorded.
The annual bird census was conducted by 22 teams across five forest ranges under the Chilika Wildlife Department. The exercise involved bird experts, OUAT students, forest department staff, and around 130 personnel from the Chilika Development Authority. While 19 teams surveyed water bodies, three teams covered land areas.
Officials attributed the rising numbers to the lake’s rich food resources and safe habitat, making Chilika a preferred destination for migratory water birds.
