Severe cold wave grips Odisha, Jharsuguda records lowest temperature at 6.3°C
Bhubaneswar, Dec 31: Odisha is currently in the grip of a severe cold wave, with several parts of the state witnessing a sharp fall in minimum temperatures, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Jharsuguda recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 6.3 degrees Celsius, marking one of the coldest nights of the season.
Other regions also experienced biting cold conditions. Rourkela registered a minimum temperature of 7.1°C, while Keonjhar recorded 8.8°C. Hirakud and Sambalpur were not spared either, with temperatures dipping to 10.6°C and 10.8°C respectively. The sudden drop in mercury has intensified winter chill, forcing residents to stay indoors during early morning and late night hours.
Along with the cold wave, dense fog has blanketed several parts of Odisha, particularly affecting coastal and northern districts. As per satellite observations, visibility in many areas dropped below 200 metres, leading to disruptions in road and rail movement. Commuters faced difficulties during early morning hours due to poor visibility.
Some pockets of southern Odisha are also witnessing foggy conditions. The IMD has advised people to remain cautious while travelling and take necessary precautions against the cold, especially elderly people, children, and those with health conditions.
