Govt reviews major storm water drain projects in Cuttack following High Court directive
Bhubaneswar, Dec 2: The Housing and Urban Development Minister, Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, informed the Odisha Assembly that the department is actively reviewing the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of five major storm water drain projects in Cuttack, in compliance with the directions issued by the High Court. His statement came as a response to a query raised by MLA Sofia Firdous, who sought clarity on the progress and current status of these crucial urban infrastructure projects.
Dr. Mahapatra assured the House that the review process is underway without any delay. He further stated that the government will proceed with the next phase of implementation once the revetted DPRs from IIT Bhubaneswar are submitted. The involvement of technical experts from IIT is expected to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the drainage designs.
In a significant step towards addressing the long-standing issue of waterlogging in the city, the government has already sanctioned ₹4 crore for the preparation of a comprehensive drainage master plan for Cuttack. Additionally, short-term measures have been initiated by the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) to ensure quick drainage of rainwater from low-lying and vulnerable areas, especially during heavy showers.
The government’s multi-pronged approach aims to mitigate flooding problems and improve urban resilience in the millennium city.
