Kalinga Ghati Road closed till September 30 after multiple landslides
Bhubaneswar, Sept 23: The Kalinga Ghati Road in Kandhamal district will remain closed till September 30 following repeated incidents of landslides in the region. The decision was taken by the District Collector after a detailed ground assessment, especially in the wake of a second major landslide reported on Monday.
According to official reports, more than five incidents of rockfalls have been recorded in the last 15 days. A particularly severe landslide on September 16 caused massive boulders to tumble down, damaging the stretch of National Highway that connects Bhanjanagar and Phulbani, disrupting traffic flow and endangering commuters.
Expert teams from Bhanjanagar and Subarnapur have been deployed to monitor the affected zone and initiate measures to restore connectivity. Local officials, including Bhanjanagar Tahasildar Abhipsa Pattnaik and Additional Tahasildar Abinash Maharana, visited the site to review the situation.
Authorities are facing challenges in clearing debris due to continuous rainfall and the high risk of fresh rockfalls. Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to use alternative routes until safety is ensured. The administration has assured that all possible steps are being taken to stabilize the road and restore normal traffic movement at the earliest.
