Water levels recede in Balasore, but flood emergency persists
Bhubaneswar, Sept 20: The flood situation in Balasore district, Odisha, remains critical as the Subarnarekha River continues to flow above the danger level, leaving many villages marooned. Despite the absence of rain, conditions have not improved due to increased water releases from the Galudih barrage in Jharkhand.
The Subarnarekha has been above the danger level for the past three days following heavy rainfall induced by a depression, but the water level is now starting to recede. Currently, the water level at Rajghat stands at 10.58 meters, compared to the danger level of 10.36 meters.
Chandrasekhar Padhi, Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, noted that drainage efforts in flood-affected villages are increasing. “We hope the water will recede from the villages in the next 24 hours,” he stated.
Additionally, the Jalaka River is flowing close to the danger mark but is also showing a downward trend, according to officials.
Meanwhile, the Balasore district administration has successfully evacuated 21,076 residents to safer locations and provided shelter. Many villages have been isolated for the past three days, with boats serving as the only means of transportation.
