Malkangiri flood situation improves, but key areas remain inundated

Bhubaneswar, Sept 10: The flood situation in Odisha's Malkangiri district showed some improvement on Tuesday, following a decrease in rainfall since Monday night. However, hundreds of villages remain submerged, and road transport to several areas continues to be disrupted.
While vehicular traffic on the Jeypore-Malkangiri main road has resumed, the Poteru area remains severely flooded, with around eight feet of water flowing over the Kanyashram bridge. Water levels are also high, between 5 and 10 feet, in areas like MV90, MV7, and MV96, affecting movement on National Highway 326.
Due to reduced rainfall, water has begun receding in Pangam, MV90, MV7, and MV96. However, bridges like Poteru and Kangurukunda remain submerged under 2 to 4 feet of water, keeping traffic between Malkangiri, Kalimela, and Chhattisgarh suspended.
Despite some receding water, the situation in the villages remains dire. Six ODRAF teams have been deployed, rescuing around 180 people in Motu and 800 in Poteru. Many villagers are returning to repair their damaged homes, but hundreds of acres of farmland remain buried under sand and mud.
