Opposition ruckus halts Odisha Assembly; session adjourned amid protests

Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The second phase of the Odisha Assembly Session started on a turbulent note on Tuesday, with opposition parties Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) disrupting proceedings over issues related to college union elections and alleged inaction against the Governor’s son. The uproar led to the Speaker adjourning the House until 11:41 a.m., just minutes after the session began.
The session opened on a somber note as the Assembly paid tributes to former Jashipur MLA Sundar Mohan Majhi. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi introduced a condolence motion, which was supported by opposition leader Pramila Mallik. The House observed a moment of silence to honor the late leader.
The proceedings soon turned chaotic as Congress and BJD members clashed over separate issues, bringing the session to a standstill. The Congress party demanded the long-delayed college union elections be held, while the BJD protested the lack of action against the Governor’s son, who allegedly assaulted assistant section officer Baikuntha Pradhan. The BJD accused the ruling party of attempting to divert attention from the issue and insisted on action against the Governor’s son.
After the initial adjournment, the Assembly resumed at 11:41 a.m., but the uproar from Congress and BJD members continued, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House again until 4 p.m. Despite efforts to restore order, the opposition's persistent disruptions led to another adjournment.
