Raging blaze threatens Similipal Sanctuary: Wildlife flees to settlements

Baripada, April 27: The forest fire in Similipal continues to intensify, burning relentlessly day and night, as reported on Saturday. The flames are spreading from hill to hill, exacerbating the situation.
Reports indicate that the entire area is engulfed in smoke due to the fire. Yesterday, fires were recorded at 42 locations in Similipal, while this morning, 35 points within the sanctuary are ablaze. The Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF) has noted 22 fire points in North Similipal and 13 in South Similipal.
Efforts to combat the inferno involve personnel from the forest department and the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF). Approximately 300 squads have been mobilized to extinguish the flames. The raging fire poses a grave threat to the wildlife and valuable trees within the sanctuary.
In response, awareness programs have been conducted at 284 locations within the sanctuary to educate the public about the situation.
The forest fire has forced a significant number of wild animals to flee toward human settlements, putting their lives at risk from hunters or local villagers. However, efforts are underway to alert and protect these animals as they venture into inhabited areas. Residents are advised to promptly notify the forest department upon sighting any animals near their villages, prioritizing their safety.
