India Clinch 165-Run Victory Over Sri Lanka in Historic Galle Test

GALLE, August 19: India began their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka on a winning note, defeating the hosts by 165 runs in Galle on Wednesday. The victory was particularly significant as it came in India’s 600th Test match, adding another memorable chapter to the country’s long Test-cricket history.

After being put into bat, India produced a strong first-innings total of 462 runs. Devdutt Padikkal was the standout performer with an impressive 167, anchoring the Indian innings and giving the visitors a solid foundation. KL Rahul also made a valuable contribution, scoring 82, as India’s batters kept the Sri Lankan bowlers under sustained pressure.

Sri Lanka responded with determination but could not match India’s first-innings total. The hosts were eventually dismissed for 284 runs, handing India a useful first-innings lead. India’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines and prevented Sri Lanka from building a decisive partnership that could have changed the course of the match.

With a significant advantage in hand, India returned to the crease for their second innings. The visitors declared at 193, setting Sri Lanka a challenging target of 372 runs to win the Test. Rishabh Pant played an important attacking innings, scoring 66, while India ensured that the hosts were left with a difficult fourth-innings chase on a turning Galle surface.

Sri Lanka began their chase with hopes of mounting a strong fightback, but India's bowling attack gradually took control. The home side struggled to deal with the pressure created by India's spinners, and wickets fell at regular intervals.

The biggest hero of India's bowling performance was young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar. He produced an outstanding match-winning display, claiming 10 wickets across the two innings. His second-innings figures of 6/55 proved particularly decisive as Sri Lanka's batting line-up collapsed under pressure.

Sri Lanka were ultimately bowled out for 206, leaving India victorious by 165 runs. The result gave India a 1–0 lead in the two-Test series and provided a major boost to the team’s confidence ahead of the second encounter.

The victory also carries significance in the ongoing 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle. India strengthened their position with another important Test win, although the team still has considerable ground to cover in the race for a place in the championship final.

For captain Shubman Gill, the result represents an encouraging beginning to the Sri Lanka tour. The team showed strength with both bat and ball, while the emergence of Suthar as a match-winning bowler added another positive to India's campaign.

India will now turn their attention to the second Test. With momentum firmly on their side, the visitors will aim to build on their Galle success and complete a series victory, while Sri Lanka will be under pressure to respond strongly and level the contest.
