Hirakud reservoir water level rises to 620.02 feet, 14 gates open
Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: The water level in the Hirakud reservoir continued to rise on Tuesday amid high inflow, with 14 sluice gates kept open to regulate the incoming water and maintain the reservoir level, according to the latest three-hourly reservoir update.
The reservoir level was recorded at 620.02 feet. Of the 14 open gates, nine are on the left side and five on the right side. The average inflow into the reservoir stood at 2,24,614 cusecs, while the average outflow was recorded at 1,99,264 cusecs.
The outflow comprised 1,64,535 cusecs through the spillway and 31,756 cusecs through the power channel. Around 229 cusecs was released for industrial use, while 2,744 cusecs was being discharged through canals.
Meanwhile, water levels at several downstream locations showed a rising trend. The discharge at Khairmal was recorded at 2,64,000 cusecs, while Barmul recorded 1,44,000 cusecs. At Mundali, the discharge stood at 1,60,938 cusecs and remained steady.
The discharge at Belgaon was recorded at 19,000 cusecs, while Patharla recorded 48,736 cusecs. At 5 pm, the total outflow from Hirakud was reported at 2,53,987 cusecs, including 2,19,408 cusecs through the spillway.
With inflow and downstream discharge remaining high, authorities are closely monitoring the reservoir and the Mahanadi river system to assess the situation and take necessary measures in vulnerable downstream areas.
