Advocate Biraja Shankar Mishra appointed Member of Odisha Human Rights Commission
Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: The Odisha government has appointed advocate Biraja Shankar Mishra as a new Member of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), according to a notification issued by the state Law Department.
The appointment has been made by the Governor of Odisha in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (1) of Section 22 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 (Act 10 of 1994).
Biraja Shankar Mishra, son of Narayan Mishra and a resident of Keonjhar district, is a practising advocate with experience in legal matters. He will assume office from the date he formally takes charge of his responsibilities as a Member of the Commission.
The official notification, signed by the Principal Secretary to the Government, stated that the Governor was pleased to appoint Mishra as a Member of the OHRC under the provisions of the Human Rights Act.
The Odisha Human Rights Commission is a statutory body entrusted with the responsibility of protecting and promoting human rights in the state. It examines complaints related to alleged violations of human rights, reviews safeguards provided under the law and recommends measures for ensuring justice and accountability.
The appointment of a new member is expected to strengthen the functioning of the Commission and enhance its capacity to address human rights-related issues in Odisha.
Mishra’s induction into the OHRC comes at a time when the Commission continues to play an important role in safeguarding the rights and interests of citizens through inquiry, recommendations and legal interventions.
