MEMU train derails near Puri station, major accident averted

Bhubaneswar, Aug 14: A major accident was averted near Puri railway station on Friday after a MEMU passenger train travelling from Talcher to Puri derailed while approaching the station.

The incident occurred near Platform No. 3, around 500 metres from Puri railway station, when the train reportedly derailed while entering the station. As the MEMU was moving at a slow speed, no major damage was reported. There were also no immediate reports of injuries or casualties.

Hundreds of passengers travelling on the train had a narrow escape. Following the derailment, the train came to a halt, after which passengers reportedly disembarked with their belongings and proceeded towards the railway station.

Railway personnel and Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff promptly reached the spot after being alerted about the incident. They secured the area and initiated measures to manage the situation and ensure passenger safety.

Efforts were also launched to remove the derailed train and restore normal railway operations at the earliest. The incident resulted in a brief disruption to train movement in the area, although other train services were reportedly not significantly affected.

Railway authorities have begun an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances and technical reasons behind the derailment. Officials are expected to examine the track, signalling system and other operational aspects as part of the probe.

Further details regarding the cause of the incident are awaited. Railway authorities said necessary measures would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
