Bhubaneswar, Aug 13: A depression has formed over coastal West Bengal and is currently positioned close to the Odisha coast, triggering heightened weather activity across parts of eastern India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

According to the IMD bulletin issued at 8:30 AM IST on August 13, 2026, the depression was centred near 22.3°N latitude and 88.6°E longitude, close to northwest of Canning in West Bengal.

The system was located around 40 km southeast of Kolkata, 130 km east of Medinipur, 190 km east-northeast of Baripada in Odisha and 260 km east-southeast of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.

The weather system is likely to move in a northwestward direction during the next 24 hours, the IMD said. It is expected to move across West Bengal and subsequently progress towards Jharkhand.

The formation of the depression is likely to enhance rainfall activity across several districts of north Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand over the coming days. Authorities have been advised to closely monitor the situation, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rain and waterlogging.

The IMD has advised fishermen to remain cautious and follow weather advisories before venturing into the sea. District administrations in the affected regions have also been urged to remain alert and take necessary precautionary measures.

The weather system is expected to gradually weaken as it moves inland, though rainfall activity may remain significant over the adjoining regions during its further movement.
