Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh arrested in Odisha in RG Kar case
Bhubaneswar, Aug 13: Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested in Odisha on Thursday in connection with the 2024 RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case in Kolkata.
Ghosh, the former MLA from Panihati, was reportedly detained by police from a hotel located along NH-16 in the Simulia area of Balasore district. He has been accused of involvement in the alleged hurried cremation of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
Police have arrested Ghosh on charges including destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and forcing a person to carry out an act against their will.
The arrest followed a fresh complaint lodged by the victim’s father at Khardaha police station on Monday. In his complaint, he alleged that Ghosh was among three persons who had pressured the family into conducting the cremation of his daughter’s body in haste.
The other two persons named in the complaint are former Panihati Municipality chairman Somnath Dey and the family’s neighbour Sanjib Mukherjee. Police said Ghosh is being taken to West Bengal by road and is expected to be produced before the Barrackpore court in North 24 Parganas district on Friday.
The development comes days after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while attending a memorial programme for the victim doctor in Panihati on Sunday, directed the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to initiate a fresh investigation into the alleged hurried cremation.
