Bhubaneswar, Aug 12: A history-sheeter was critically injured after three unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire on him at Jharabeda village under Balimi police station in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday morning.

The injured man has been identified as Binaya Nayak, who sustained multiple bullet injuries in the attack. His condition reportedly deteriorated after the incident, following which he was referred from Hindol Sub-Divisional Hospital to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Angul for advanced treatment.

According to preliminary reports, the incident took place in broad daylight when Nayak was present in the village. Three motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly intercepted him and fired around 10 rounds. Several bullets reportedly struck his thigh.

After the shooting, the attackers allegedly threw the injured man into a nearby pond before fleeing the area. Hearing the sound of gunfire, local residents rushed to the spot. Villagers, along with Nayak’s family members, managed to rescue him from the pond and immediately shifted him to the Hindol hospital.

On being informed, a team from Balimi police station reached the village, secured the area and began an investigation. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and searching for the unidentified assailants.

The exact motive behind the shooting has not yet been established. Police said Nayak has several criminal cases registered against him at different police stations in the district and is listed as a history-sheeter.
