Bhubaneswar, Aug 12: The low-pressure area currently prevailing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify further during the next 36 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), prompting heightened weather alerts across Odisha and neighbouring coastal regions.

As per the latest IMD update, the system is expected to become a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours. It may subsequently intensify into a depression during the following 24 hours. The system is moving in a north-westward direction and is likely to cross the Bangladesh-West Bengal coast.

The IMD has advised residents in coastal Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh and adjoining areas to remain vigilant and regularly follow official weather bulletins as the system develops.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has forecast widespread rainfall across Odisha, with most places likely to receive rain during the day.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Angul and Keonjhar districts, prompting the issuance of an Orange Warning.

A Yellow Warning has also been issued for isolated heavy rainfall in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Puri and Khordha districts.

The IMD has urged people to remain cautious, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas, and follow advisories issued by local authorities as the weather system strengthens.
