Odisha braces for heavy rain; orange alerts issued for several districts
Bhubaneswar, Aug 11: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several parts of Odisha from August 12 to 18, issuing Orange and Yellow warnings for different districts during the period.
For August 12, an Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur. Moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are also likely in Baleshwar, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Angul. A Yellow warning for heavy rainfall covers Jajpur, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Dhenkanal and other districts.
On August 13, Orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rain have been issued for Angul and Keonjhar, while Yellow warnings remain in force across several coastal, northern and interior districts. For August 14, Sundargarh will remain under an Orange warning, with Yellow alerts covering several other districts.
From August 15 to 18, rainfall intensity is likely to decrease slightly, though Yellow warnings will continue in parts of northern Odisha. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph may persist across several districts.
The IMD said an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas persists. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form around August 12. Residents have been advised to remain alert and follow weather updates.
